"Our Father who art in heaven". When you say these words, do not think that God is not on earth ; do not believe that He is locked up in a place where any contact stops. Understand rather than you are of heavely origin and than your Father is in the heaven; endeavor to live holily to be worthy of your Father who is holy [...]

 
"Hallowed be thy name". `We are indeed his offspring, therefore are called of his name. Consequently let us ask that this Name, Saint in oneself and by oneself, be sanctified in us [...]


"Thy kingdom come". One moment ago when God did not reign? We ask consequently: that That which always reigned for himself, reign while maintaining to us, so that we also we can reign in Him [...]


"Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven". It is the Kingdom of God when, in the heaven and on earth, there is only one will: that of God. When, in heart of each one, God is seing, is acting, is reigningl [...]

  
"Give us this day our daily bread". [...] The heavenly Father exhorts his heavenly children to claim the heavenly bread. Himself said: "I am the bread which comes down from the heaven "(Jn 6, 5 I). It is the bread sown in the Virgin, fermented in the flesh, made at the time of Passion, cooked with the furnace of the sepulchre. Hidden in the churches, brought on the furnace bridges, it provides each day to faithful celestial food.


"And forgive us our debts As we also have forgiven our debtors". If you cannot be without sin and if you want to be forgiven, you must always forgive [...]


"And lead us not into temptation". On this earth the life is test or temptation. Job known as: " The life of the man is a hard service" (Jb 7, 1). Let us pray God so that He does not leave us with our free decision, but that of each one of our acts we are retained by his paternal kindness [...]


"But deliver us from evil. "Of which evil? Satan undoubtedly, which proceeds any evil [...] (Homily 67)


The author


Peter Chrysologus (towards 450). Peter was born in Imola, where he was ordained a deacon by Cornelius, Bishop of Imola. He was made an archdeacon. He was a counsellor of Pope Leo I. Known as "The Doctor of Homilies," Peter was known for his short but inspired talks; he is said to have been afraid of boring his audience.
