The sacraments were instituted by Jesus Christ.
There are seven:
Baptism
Confirmation
Eucharist
Penance
Anointing of the Sick
Holy Orders
Marriage.
The seven sacraments are for all stages of the Christian life. They give birth and growth in the life of faith.
The first three are called the sacraments of Christian initiation, as the newly baptized adults receive baptism, confirmation and Eucharist.
Les 2 following are the sacraments of healing: penance or reconciliation, sacrament of the sick.
The other 2 are at the service of communion and mission of every believer: the ordination of deacons, priests and bishops, and the marriage sacrament that future spouses give themselves.
The Eucharist occupies a unique place as the "Sacrament of Sacraments".
