Bible is the book the more known in the world, but also the more translated. Yet, Christianity is not a religion of the Book, nor wisdom to live well. It is not even, stricto sensu, a religion. It is the universal assembly of those which believe in Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word.
The word "Christian" appeared for the first time toward 62 (1 Peter 4,16). It refers to Christ (Messiah). True God and true man, Jesus makes the Father know and give the Holy Spirit. He reveals the mystery of the Holy Trinidad, only one God in three "Persons" : Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Jesus doesn't speak "in the name of God" like a prophet (Isaiah, Jeremiah …). He is God who came to speak to the man. Gospels report his gestures and his words.
The original languages of the Bible are Aramaean, Hebrew and Greek. The first recognized latin translation is the one of Jerome (the Vulgate - towards 400). However, there is no "sacred" language, because if the Christianity is inserted into the history, Jesus calls to the salvation those of any place and of any time. The Bible can be thus translated in all the languages.
The entire Bible is inspired. The "canon of Holy Scriptures" was very early fixed (fourth century). It contains, for the Old Testament, 46 books (legislative, historic, poetic and prophetic): Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, […] and 27 for the New Testament : Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Acts of the Apostles, the 13 letters of Paul, Hebrew, James, Peter (2), John (3) Jude and Book of Revelation. Other books, called apocrypha, can present a historic interest. Some are used in the Holy Liturgy (in Orthodoxy), but they are not a part of the Bible. Many apocrypha are gnostics papers (coming from heretical sects): "by a deceitfully ordered credibility, they seduce the spirit of the ignoramuses " (Irenee - towards 170).
To the origin, the supports of the writing are often parchments or papyri. One fastens the papyri together to do books (codex). One has access to complete texts of the Bible in Greek: the parchments of the 4-5th centuries of the Monastery Holy Catherine of the Sinai and library of Vatican (the Alexandrinus). There are also some very old papyri: p. e., a gospel of John dating back to 150. Bible is more a living library than an alone book. She invites to participate in Life of God. While reading or listening the Holy Scriptures, one perceives the Love design of God for the men.
Bible reveals the condition of the man and the woman and how they can be saved by Christ. One there learns to more better to know life and the words of Jesus, the only Son of eternal Father. She nourishes spiritual life. Each Christian can evangelize. Church' Magistery helps to understand better biblical texts.
